PENTIMENT
Development from 2019-2022
A 2D historical detective game set in the Early Modern period, with an art style meant to evoke the wooden engravings of the time. Made in Unity. My contributions included:
- Character design: I designed 52 of the 112 characters and readied various assets for Spine;
- UI support: collaborating with programmers to successfully create a 3D journal and its functions for a 2D game;
- Background support: coloring, designing, and propping various side-scrolling backgrounds;
- Flexibility: Addressing other needs as brought up by our small team of 12.
Several murals were painted for the ending of Pentiment to be story-reactive to the player’s decisions in the final act of the game.
Cards based on historical playing cards of the time (early modern and medieval eras). The royal cards have symbolism representing the protagonist’s background in the game.
UI support for player backgrounds; these icons were shown in the journal UI displaying information about the protagonist.
The background of a pivotal scene in the game, based on historical engravings of bizarre creatures (namely Les Songes drolatiques de Pantagruel and the Garden of Earthly Delights). The maze involved broke the typical game structure and required close communication with the director and programmers.
A map of Kiersau and of Tassing. UI support and functionality was required for a unique feature, which included a 3D overview map that was overlaid on top of the game’s 2D scenes.
A meal minigame representing the socioeconomic dissonance between various characters in the cast.
Various plants designed separately from the background to allow animators to apply various effects in Spine.
Small creatures designed for rigging in Spine.
Background painting. The garden was drawn and colored separately by me, with assets separated for animation in Spine.
Background painting and prop passes for a bakery in various acts of the game, showing how a family has changed over the course of many years.
Festival goers design for a scene - these assets were separated for animation in Spine.
A storybook-style illustration based on Ethiopian illuminated manuscripts.
